tradition...

"Tradition simply means that we need to end what began well and continue what is worth continuing."

I am a big traditionalist. I like to pick from the fond memories that my mom provided when I was a kid (there are many) and carry them on (adding a few) with my kids.

*Ornaments*

Every year we got a new ornament (labeled with our name and the year) so we would have something to decorate our Christmas tree with once we were married. Genius! I have carried on that tradition with my kids.

Here are a few of my own that I got when I was a kid...

Here are some that my kids have received...

Makes for a very eclectic tree!!

Every once in a while I think it is time for my "grown up tree". You know, fragile stuff, bows, etc. Then I take out our cute (and some very old...ahem) ornaments and quickly give up that thought. My sister has to relinquish the ornaments of her first born this Christmas. That's a good thing, but also a little sad for sappy moms like us.
I think I'll just enjoy the tradition and the memories as long as I can!! (Cuz it will be, like, tomorrow that they're all grown up & outa here.)

Very cute. Every tree needs to have those ornaments with a story. The sentimental ones that otherwise would not get hung. We have lots of them.

I like your tree. I like the variety. It allows for more variety throughout the years.

I'm wiping a tear. I've had the grown up tree and I'm over it. It will be sad next year without the Evan ornaments.

truth be told, i have the same tree theory. and i wouldn't have it any other way.

except when the kids make those really ugly ornaments... because those have to go on their own tree. i do have some pride.

ok so there has to be an ornament on there somewhere of us in high school sitting on Santa's lap! That was a scary tradition! Even scarier that I am making my own children do the same thing!

Such a great traditon to pass along their ornaments when they are grown. I agree with you...sometimes I want a perfectly decorated grown up tree...but I can't seem to pass up letting them put their special ornaments on the tree each year.

Your tree looks beautiful!

We have the exact same tradition and now have so many ornaments I pile them on two trees and up the banister garlands.

I want to do a post about my favorite childhood ornaments. Some are hideous, but they connect me to my glorious past!

I love a tree with sentimental value - not just fragile perfection. It get s the kids excited. My tree is like that too!

I guess my kids will have to fend for themselves when it comes to them moving out and decorating their own tree. Maybe by then it will be time for more new ornaments on my tree and I'll just give them the old ones which by the way are very cute. Your tree always looks darling!

I love your tree. I think I'm going to copy you. I love the idea of giving them a lifetime worth of ornaments for their own trees It's not too late, this is Isaac's first Christmas and only Caleb's third.

My tree is alot like yours. I also envy the fancy ones. But when all is said and done...my kids (an myself) would rather have the traditional ornaments. Much better!
